About the Role

We currently partner with five schools in Colombia, Honduras, India, Kenya, and Guatemala, and since our inception in 2013, we have sponsored the education of over 6,000 children. With the successful completion of our foundational phase (infrastructure development), we are entering Phase 2: strategic growth and expanded impact. To navigate this exciting journey, we seek passionate and experienced leaders in business and nonprofit sectors to join our Board of Directors and help shape our future.

OVERVIEW

Board Directors are crucial in supporting our mission and growth. This strategic governance and leadership role is for individuals who believe in education's transformative power and are committed to using their skills, experience, and networks to create a meaningful impact. As a Board Director, you will help guide the organization through its next growth phase, ensure responsible resource stewardship, and advocate for our vision across various communities and sectors.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategic Oversight & Executive Leadership: Shape and refine the long-term vision and strategic plan. Support and counsel the Executive Director and leadership team.
  • Financial Stewardship: Review and approve budgets and financial statements. Ensure the organization remains fiscally sound, transparent, and compliant with legal obligations.
  • Fundraising & Resource Development: Lead by example with a personally significant annual donation. Actively support fundraising initiatives by leveraging your network and expertise.
  • Ambassadorship & Advocacy: Promote our mission within your community and beyond. Identify and refer potential major donors, board members, and strategic partners.
  • Monitoring & Evaluation: Help define organizational goals and monitor progress toward impact. Provide insights and accountability on key performance indicators.
  • Engagement & Attendance: Attend quarterly board meetings (virtual or in-person), key events such as the Annual Gala, and strategic retreats. Be an active participant in board discussions and decision-making.
  • Energy & Passion: Bring a proactive spirit, collaborative mindset, and a deep commitment to equity in education.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Mission-Driven: You are genuinely inspired by our vision of a world where every child has access to quality primary education, invigorating and exciting those with whom you share it.
  • Impact-Oriented: You have a broad impact across geographies and sectors and believe in education as a catalyst for generational change, striving to contribute to global equity and opportunity.
  • Leadership Experience: You have senior- or executive-level experience in business, nonprofit, or relevant sectors (e.g., finance, legal, marketing, development, governance) and a proven track record of guiding organizations through growth and transformation.
  • Time & Travel Commitment: You are willing to dedicate a minimum of 4 hours/month to board activities and fundraising efforts. Must be available for quarterly board meetings (virtual and in-person), annual strategic retreats, and key events.
  • Willingness to travel to locations such as New York City or San Francisco at least twice a year for board meetings.
  • Attendance at one in-person annual board strategy retreat is required.
  • Participation in fundraising events, including the Annual Gala.
  • We strongly recommend visiting at least one of our partner schools during your term.
  • Committee Participation: Board members are encouraged to contribute their knowledge and leadership by serving on at least one committee (e.g., Development, Finance, School Partnerships, Nominating & Engagement) and participating in regular committee calls and activities.
  • Integrity & Accountability: You exhibit ethical leadership, transparency, and a strong commitment to acting in the organization's best interest.
  • Collaborative & Strategic Thinking: You are a thoughtful contributor who thrives in diverse teams, bringing energy, curiosity, and a bias towards action, while actively engaging in high-level discussions and taking on responsibilities in execution and delivery.
  • Inclusive Perspective: We value diversity and believe that our strength lies in the varied backgrounds and perspectives of our members, reflecting the communities we serve.
  • No Conflicts of Interest: Must disclose any potential conflicts and act solely in the agency of the organization.
  • Give/Get: Minimum $10,000 a year (typically structured as a monthly give). While there is no direct 'get,' your support is critical to successful fundraising efforts, benefiting from network effects (mutual connections, critical mass relationships at specific firms or foundations).

We believe in the power of diversity and inclusion and encourage applicants from all backgrounds and experiences to apply. Every child, regardless of their circumstances, deserves access to quality education. Join our mission to bring light, hope, and opportunity to children who need it most.
